2AM News: The week in review Sept.18-24

2AM News: The week in review Sept.16-24
Source: Second Amendment News Digest

The story of the week continues to be the lessons learned from Katrina ... the now obvious to even the dullest of the sheeple lesson that being armed in a disaster is a 'good thing', as you can protect yourself and your neighbors when the gov't police are nowhere to be found ... and the ominous lesson that the gov't thugs WILL indeed seize your guns. A lawsuit filed by the SAF and NRA causes a federal judge to issue a temporary restraining order on Thursday, bringing an end to the gun seizures ... no word yet on if, when, or how the seized weapons will be returned to their rightful owners ... and, no word on any punishment to be meted out to the gun grabbers (and to those who gave the order). If the gun grabbers get off "scot free", as seems likely, it'll happen again, next 'disaster' ... and if the courts can issue no punishment, well, it's getting near Claire time.

Across America, armed citizens continue to exercise their 2nd Amendment rights to defend themselves, their friends and their property ... self defense stories this week from 18 states: Ohio, Virginia, Colorado, Tennessee, Louisiana, Washington, Florida, Illinois, Nevada, Minnesota, Georgia, Texas, California, Arizona, Maine, South Dakota, Texas. New Hampshire ...

The week in review: Sept.11-17

What a week this has been for 2nd Amendment supporters! The 'blatantly illegal' gun confiscation in New Orleans, though glossed over in the major media (which has apparently returned to its role as government lapdog), has raced over the Net like wildfire as gun owner support groups pooiint out that 'Disaster can't destroy gun rights' (NRA) , call for investigation of the gun seizures (CCRKBA) and call for grass roots action to 'Help rattle the cages on gun confiscation ' (GOA); cartoonist extraordinaire Scott Bieser produces perhaps his most important political cartoon ever ('Boston in 1774, New Orleans in 2005 ') and columnists point out 'Gun seizures are unacceptable, Mr. President! ' (no answer from the Prez, of course:-) , 'Bad decision, dangerous precedent ' (the understatement of the week) and 'Katrina educates world on need for owning guns ' . Will this indeed be a ';moment of ephinany' as L. Neil Smith believes? Or, as the establishment apparently hopes ...does 'Everybody love martial law' (Joe Plummer)?

Meanwhile, ... in the disaster area, the 'Algiers Point militia guards neighborhood ', while 'Fears of post-Katrina disorder spark gun-buying spree ' and 'WalMart halts gun sales, infuriates customers ' ... while across America, citizens continue to defend themselves, their neighbors and their property , in Alabama, Louisiana, Idaho, Georgia, New Mexico, Minnesota, Florida, Colorado, and Conecticut; in Virginia 'Gun show owner, patron, may file law suit' against the BATF and police who 'conducted 'Task Force' undercover surveillance and enforcement operations in connection with six gun shows in Richmond, Va., between July of 2004 and June of 2005'.

These are, indeed, interesting times ... keep your powder dry!

The week in Review Sept 3-10

For those who thought it would never happen in America ... gun confiscation began in New Orleans on Friday. Yes, really ... look at the video yourself. (New Orleans gun confiscation video) Yes, it is 'blatantly illegal' ('New Orleans gun confiscation blatantly illegal ' by Dave Kopel, 'A quick civics 101 lesson ' GeekWithA.45). No, the NRA has not done anything, not even made a statement.

In other news, folks across America continue to use the Second Amendment right to self defense .... in the disaster areas of Louisiana and Mississippi, in extraordinary times, as well as in the 'unscathed' areas of America (Florida, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Kansas, Indiana, California, Texas, and Arkansas). If these folks had been disarmed, like the folks still in New Orleans, who have now lost everything, including their right to self defense, they'd also be victims with no name.

Yes, the line in the sand for many has been crossed. Now what?

Gun control efforts weaken in South
Boston Globe

" Even as Boston struggles against a tide of smuggled handguns, some state governments in the South are loosening their gun control laws in ways that critics say will make it easier for traffickers to bring illegal firearms into the Northeast. Under pressure from the National Rifle Association, South Carolina abolished a state law last year that limited to one the number of handguns individuals can buy in a month, a measure that was designed in 1975 to prevent trafficking. Virginia, which was the epicenter of gun smuggling into New York and Boston before it passed a one-gun-per-month law in 1993, weakened that rule in 2004 and gun control advocates fear that it could soon be abolished. Academic studies have shown that limits on monthly gun purchases help limit smuggling, but lobbyists for gun manufacturers call such laws ''gun rationing" and say they infringe on Second Amendment gun ownership rights." Woman escapes New Orleans, returns home
News Press

"Rhonda Mandel hates guns. But then Hurricane Katrina sideswiped New Orleans on Monday and the Fort Myers woman was suddenly stuck in a French Quarter hotel.
Two days later, Mandel found herself and about 75 other guests preparing to drive an armed caravan of abandoned cars out of the city. Mandel's driver — a hotel employee armed to the teeth — stopped to show her how to use a handgun. "I told him no," Mandel said. "I didn't want to." The engineer looked her in the eye, deadly serious. Just blocks away, the people of New Orleans had already started to loot and rob and kill each other.
"He said, 'What are you going to do when they shoot me?'" Mandel recalled. She didn't have a good response. "OK," she finally answered. "Show me.'" (09/04/05)

Ohio: Gun rights advocate found guilty
Toledo Blade

"A Wood County man who carried a loaded handgun in Ottawa Park to challenge Toledo’s ban on concealed weapons in city parks was convicted yesterday of a misdemeanor gun charge. Toledo Municipal Court Judge Gene Zmuda found Bruce Beatty had violated a city ordinance that prohibits people from possessing concealed weapons in parks. He was fined $50 and ordered to pay court costs, which was stayed pending an appeal.
The trial was held after Judge Zmuda ruled the city ordinance doesn’t conflict with a state law that allows adults with permits to carry concealed weapons. He said the city has the authority under its home-rule power to prohibit guns in parks. .... Mr. Beatty said after the trial that he would continue to fight the ordinance through an appeal to the Ohio 6th District Court of Appeal." (09/03/05)

Mississippi: Neighbors team up to provide security
Washington Post

"Jeffrey Powell yanked the cushions off his living room sofa and arranged them on the bed of his truck. Then he got his shotgun, made himself comfortable, and spent the night in his driveway, protecting his hurricane-ravaged home and enjoying whatever breeze he could catch on a steamy night. Powell is part of the Popps Ferry Landing neighborhood watch, a group of citizens trying to restore order and peace in their middle-class community a week after Hurricane Katrina brought her chaos. "We're not going to have any looters out here," said Dan Shearin, 56, Powell's next-door neighbor. "We have some burly men who are sleeping outside with guns. If the looters come, we'll take care of them." .... As stories of violent and desperate looters have made their way across Mississippi, people in communities where law enforcement has been overwhelmed are reaching for their guns to police their streets. In Popps Ferry Landing, many neighbors had lived near each other for years but had never spoken. The realization that their safety and homes were vulnerable and police presence was scarce brought them together quickly." (09/05/05)

Texas: Woman may not be arrested in fatal shooting
Star Telegram

"Police have not arrested a woman involved in a fatal shooting Saturday because it may have been self-defense, a detective said Sunday. Thaddeus Prater, 22, was shot once in the neck in an apartment at the Oakwood Apartments, 6351 Vega Drive, homicide detective Mike Carroll said. Police did not arrest the woman because witnesses said she shot Prater after he forced his way into an apartment she shares with her boyfriend, Carroll said." (09/05/05)

California:Early morning shooting leaves one man injured
Woodland Daily Democrat

"A Woodland man was shot several times early Sunday after he apparently tried to enter the wrong apartment. No arrests have been made in the incident, which occurred when Woodland police responded to a 9-1-1 call from an apartment complex on Elston Circle at about 1:30 a.m. A resident of the apartment had reported that someone was attempting to gain access to the apartment she shared with her husband. At the same time, the husband attempted to determine who was outside the door and why. The man outside then began pounding on the door and threatening the occupants. The husband retrieved a handgun and fired six shots through the front door, five of which struck the man in his chest and arms." (09/05/05)

Louisiana: With guns and generators, a few homeowners stand guard over neighbourhoods
Canada.com

"When night falls, Charlie Hackett climbs the steps to his boarded-up window, takes down the plywood, grabs his 12-gauge shotgun and waits. He is waiting for looters and troublemakers, for anyone thinking his neighbourhood has been abandoned like so many others across the city. Two doors down, John Carolan is doing the same on his screened-in porch, pistol by his side. They are not about to give up their homes to the lawlessness that has engulfed New Orleans in the wake of hurricane Katrina. "We kind of together decided we would defend what we have here and we would stay up and defend the neighbourhood," says Hackett, a U.S. Army veteran with a snow-white beard and a business installing custom kitchens." The week in review August 28-September 3

This week's big story is, of course, the devastation in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast caused by Katrina ... and the government. On the bright side, several reports of residents fending off looters and restoring order, but the entire fiasco can be summed up by Longnecker's excellent commentary "Looting: Where are the gunnies?". [" the murder, mayhem, bedlam and rampant crime is an example of citizen disarmament. Only this time, the guns of defense have been submerged, floated away or otherwise irretrievable. The power of the people to participate in their own defense has been drowned"] An object lesson for us all.

Meanwhile, stories of armed citizens defending themselves and their property continue to pour in from the rest of the country ... California, North Carolina, New Mexico, West Virginia, Washington, New Jersey, Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Utah and Texas ...while the "gov't thugs of the week" award goes to ... the Canadian cops who are 'ticked off' by kids wearing "Be Armed' T-shirts ... and are seizing the shirts. For an excellent commentary on armed self-defense, read 'How often do Americans use guns for defensive purposes?'

Looting: Where are the gunnies?
Mens News Daily
John Longnecker

"New Orleans is the perfect case study to appreciate what can happen – what does happen – when armed resistance and civilian authority in general are neutralized as they have been with the flood which separates the citizens from their armed protection. Violent predators then have nothing to fear from unarmed citizens. And that’s the key. Criminals do not fear police, but they do fear armed citizens. .... Gunnies are Gun Owners. Gunnies are the Liberty Nuts who like to exercise all of their civil rights in the Bill of Rights. Since the beginning of the Republic, citizen involvement has been the secret to everything from day to day functioning to resistance to attack to way of life. Things run smoothly in self-governance. Even when disaster strikes. ... New Orleans is not a matter of looting - it is in a condition of complete anarchy. But it is much more of an example than that: the murder, mayhem, bedlam and rampant crime is an example of citizen disarmament. Only this time, the guns of defense have been submerged, floated away or otherwise irretrievable. The power of the people to participate in their own defense has been drowned." (09/02/05).

How often do Americans use guns for defensive purposes?
World Net Daily
Laurence Elder

"Forty-six-year-old Joyce Cordoba stood behind the deli counter while working at a Wal-Mart in Albuquerque, N.M. Suddenly, her ex-husband – against whom Ms. Cordoba had a restraining order – showed up, jumped over the deli counter, and began stabbing Ms. Cordoba. Due Moore, a 72-year-old Wal-Mart customer, witnessed the violent attack. Moore, legally permitted to carry a concealed weapon, pulled out his gun, and shot and killed the ex-husband. Ms. Cordoba survived the brutal attack and is recovering from her wounds. This raises a question. How often do Americans use guns for defensive purposes?" (09/01/05)

California:homeowner released after fatal shooting of alleged intruder
Mercury News

"A West San Jose homeowner shot and killed a man who broke into his house late Thursday and assaulted him, according to San Jose police.Sgt. Nick Muyo said the homeowner was released pending a review of the case .... Homicide detectives were satisfied with that account after interviewing the unidentified 60-year-old homeowner for several hours.Muyo said the 38-year-old dead suspect, whose name was not immediately available, had been in an argument outside with another adult who lives in the house. That man came inside and closed the door behind him, apparently seeking to avoid a physical fight. It didn't work. 'The suspect breaks the door down and confronts the resident. The homeowner hears the commotion and comes downstairs with a weapon and gets assaulted,'' Muyo said. When the man hit him again, Muyo said, the homeowner shot the intruder." "You must ask yourself if we will stand by and surrender our weapons when the time comes, or will we fight. I’m not talking about a shooting war; I’m talking about demanding that our government do what is right and Constitutional. You and I have seen them bend to public will before when the pressure is put on. Now many times they bend to pressure by minority groups and those with the most money. We don’t even see the Republicans who are in a majority standing up to the Democrats who are not. When will they tell them to take a hike and do the right thing? They all seem to be afraid of the media and what will happen if they fight this minority of people who are attempting to sway public opinion." (09/01/05)

Canada: Ontario to do blitz inspections of gun shops, ask for guns to be turned in
940 News

"The Ontario government and Toronto Police Service are working together to get more guns off the streets of the province's biggest city. Toronto has seen a deadly spate of gun violence this summer. Attorney General Michael Bryant says there will be 'blitz' inspections of gun businesses to ensure they're storing their guns safely. Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair says half the illegal guns on the city's streets come from robberies of gun shops or gun owners. Bryant says the province and various police forces will hold a gun amnesty where people can turn in any illegal guns or guns they feel they can't store safely. But he doesn't know yet when that will start or which police forces will take part." (09/02/05)

Mississippi:Residents fend off looters
Charlotte Observer

"Many people stayed in their homes during the storm, including Nanette Clark, who lives several blocks behind the boulevard. She and her friend, Jayne Davis, spent the night and day of the storm moving furniture to a higher floor as water lapped, then pounded, at the front door. Some water did seep in, but the door held. On Tuesday night, Davis said, she and Clark shot at looters from the second-floor balcony of her pink house with gingerbread trim. Nobody was injured and the looters scattered, she said. Many hand-painted signs in that neighborhood warned looters that they were likely to be shot by armed homeowners." [use info@news-dihests.com/news-digests to login](08/31/05)

City of misery, guns & despair
New York Daily News

" I went looking for the Big Easy yesterday. I found Dodge City instead. Looters ran wild, some desperate for food and water, others just taking advantage of a chance at free cigarettes and beer. In the Carrollton neighborhood, two armed men - self-appointed sheriffs in a white pickup - confronted them. Spotting thieves who had commandeered a forklift and smashed into a Rite Aid store, the two men fired above the looters' heads and ran them off. .... Not far away, at Cooter Brown's Bar & Grill, the weary owner stood sentry with a pal to keep the looters at bay. He had a .357 magnum, a 9-mm. handgun, a 12-gauge shotgun and no hesitation about using any of them. "The cops are busy as it is. If more citizens took security and matters into their own hands, we won't be in this situation," said owner Art DePodesta, 30, as he warily scanned the street." (09/01/05)
