Man Executed in Ala. for 1993 Slaying
Wasington Post
"An anti-government extremist was executed Thursday for the 1993 shooting death of a police officer who was gunned down as he approached the man's car. George Sibley Jr. nodded to relatives, stared at his victim's family and gave a final statement of defiance before he was put to death. Sibley, 62, was convicted of capital murder for the slaying of police officer Roger Motley. Sibley's common-law wife, Lynda Lyon Block, 54, was executed in 2002 for her role in Motley's death. The officer was gunned down in a Wal-Mart parking lot in Opelika when he approached the couple's car. A passer-by had said a child in the vehicle had been asking for help." Florida: Man fatally shoots Largo neighbor
St. Petersburg Times
"Donna L. Christian, 45, knocked on the door of neighbor John F. Shockley about 6:30 p.m. Sunday in Green Meadows mobile home park. She wanted to use Shockley's phone to call a cab; she was trying to get away from her live-in boyfriend, who was drinking, said Sgt. Jim Bordner. Then Christian's boyfriend arrived. John Hedrick, 36, who recently pleaded no contest to a domestic battery charge and spent more than 3 months in county jail, entered Shockley's home and began arguing with him and Christian, Bordner said.
A fistfight broke out and Hedrick picked up a ceramic lamp and smashed it on Shockley's head, investigators said. Shockley grabbed a handgun and fired one shot, hitting Hedrick in the chest. Hedrick was pronounced dead at the scene about 15 minutes later." (08/01/05)
